Thomas Czioska, Head of Sales & Marketing, and Christoph Recher, Sales Manager, of LoeschPack discuss buying used packaging equipment. Czioska says buyers should contact the original supplier and that buying a machine whose supplier is out of business is very risky. Recher explains that LoeschPack assists with commissioning, provides three to four weeks of run-up support after the SAT, and supplies digital manuals and a digital spare parts catalog.

Key takeaways

  • Thomas Czioska says buying a used machine is very risky if the supplier is out of business, because you do not know the programming and may not have spare parts.
  • Christoph Recher says LoeschPack always assists with commissioning and, after the SAT, provides about three to four weeks of run-up support.
  • LoeschPack manuals are typically digital on the HMI and searchable by keyword, with one hard copy and a newly rolled-out digital spare parts catalog.

Common questions

What are the risks of buying a used packaging machine?
Thomas Czioska of LoeschPack says that with a used LoeschPack machine, "it's not a problem at all," and that buyers should go directly to the machine's supplier. Buying used equipment is very risky if the original supplier is out of business, because you do not know how the programming is and you may not have spare parts or former parts. If the supplier is still in the market, contact them directly; LoeschPack often helps customers this way and can bring in its own mechanics and engineers to bring such machines up to a level where they run well.
What installation support comes with a new LoeschPack machine?
Christoph Recher of LoeschPack says the company always assists with commissioning, because customers typically do not have experienced mechanics in-house. After the machine is commissioned and passes the SAT, LoeschPack also provides run-up support, for example three to four weeks of assistance while the rest of the equipment is run up.
Why is a digital machine manual useful?
Christoph Recher of LoeschPack says manuals are now typically digital and available on the HMI, with one hard copy usually supplied as well. The easiest benefit is that you can type in keywords to search for your problem, which is difficult with a hard copy. LoeschPack has also just rolled out a digital spare parts catalog. Recher says preventing downtime relies more on LoeschPack's experience in providing the typical wear parts; notifying customers in advance, for example that a belt might go down in two to three months, is "an idea for the future."

Tell us about purchasing equipment. Consumers have a choice, I've seen on the internet, whether they could buy new equipment, and I've seen used equipment being offered. Talk to us about the risks of buying a used piece of equipment.

What kind of support would they get? Is it feasible for their, how, why shouldn't a customer buy a used piece of equipment if it hasn't been used very much, for instance?

Thomas Czioska, Head of Sales & Marketing, LoeschPack

If you're talking about a Loesch machine, it's not a problem at all.

Tom Rougeux

Okay.

Thomas Czioska

Of course, you can buy a used machine in the market, if you get one.

I would say you should really go directly in contact with the supplier of this machine.

Tom Rougeux

What if that supplier is out of business?

Thomas Czioska

I would say it's very risky, because you do not know about how the programming is, you do not have spare parts, you do not have former parts. These are all things you have to take into consideration. If you have a supplier still in the market and you can directly go in contact with him, so we do that very often, that the customers contact us, and then we can help them out, and we also can bring in our mechanics and our engineers to keep the, to bring this machine on a level that it's really running well.

Tom Rougeux

Does LoeschPack provide installation support when you buy a piece of equipment?

Christoph Recher, Sales Manager, LoeschPack

Of course, always, because usually a customer is not able to commission the machine themselves, because typically you don't have the experienced mechanics within your company. So we will assist you. What we also provide is run-up support.

So let's say the machine is commissioned, we pass the SAT, we would also provide you with, let's say, three to four weeks with assistance while you run up the rest of the equipment.

Tom Rougeux

Okay, and talk to us about manuals for equipment. If you're buying a used piece of equipment, you may or may not get a manual. How does LoeschPack provide documentation to the customer?

Christoph Recher

Well, the manual nowadays is typically digital. You can have that available on your HMI. We usually also supply one hard copy, and one big advantage, which we have just rolled out, is that you get a digital spare parts catalog right for your machine.

Tom Rougeux

So that might help the customer with a digital spare parts catalog. Does that help with downtime, preventing downtime?

Christoph Recher

Preventing downtime, I would say, relies a little bit more on our experience to provide you with the typical wear parts, that you have these available. Of course, it is an idea for the future to have that available for the customers as well, to notify them, look at that belt, it might go down in two to three months. Please order one in time, so you will prevent downtime.

Tom Rougeux

How does having the manual digital help the customer?

Christoph Recher

The easiest feature, of course, is that you can just type in some keywords to search for your problem. With a hard copy, it's difficult.

Tom Rougeux

Got it.
