Hygienic Design, Installation and Training
Thomas Bornemann, Director Sales & Marketing at Hastamat, says hygienic design reduces cleaning time and therefore downtime. Hastamat machines are built in stainless steel, and product-contact parts can be cleaned with water. Hastamat sends its own technicians for installation and includes basic training, and Dennis Feldbusch, Area Sales Manager, says some machines are still running after over 35-40 years.
Key takeaways
- Thomas Bornemann says hygienic design reduces cleaning time and therefore downtime, and that Hastamat's hygienic design is visible from the first second compared with other suppliers; Hastamat vertical machines are hygienically designed, and its weighers are offered at different levels of hygienic design.
- Hastamat machines are built in stainless steel, and all parts in contact with the product can be cleaned with water, even when not built for a wet area.
- Hastamat sends its own technicians for installation and includes basic training, and Thomas Bornemann recommends a second training once operators have run the machine for a while.
Common questions
- Does hygienic machine design reduce downtime?
- Yes. According to Thomas Bornemann of Hastamat, hygienic design reduces cleaning time, which reduces downtime. Hastamat's vertical machines are hygienically designed, its weighers are offered at different levels of hygienic design, and all of its machines are built in stainless steel.

- Thomas Bornemann of Hastamat says all parts in contact with the product can be cleaned with water, even when the machine is not produced for a wet area. Hastamat machines are built in stainless steel and are used in dry production areas.
- What training should operators get on a new packaging machine?
- According to Thomas Bornemann of Hastamat, basic training is included in the installation. His recommendation is to do the standard training, let the operators run the machine for a while until questions come up, and then hold another training.

Let's talk about hygienic design in a machine. Does Hastamat make machines that are designed for hygienic cleaning?
Thomas Bornemann, Director Sales & Marketing, Hastamat
For sure, you can see it from the first second if you compare it with other suppliers. So, hygienic design is a very important part, because this is also combined to the downtime. It means hygienic design reduces the cleaning time, it means reduces the downtime at the end.
Tom Rougeux
Are all machines hygienic designed?
Thomas Bornemann
In combination with the vertical machines, yes. For weighers, we have different kinds of models, so we can have different levels of hygienic design. We can offer different levels.
Dennis Feldbusch, Area Sales Manager, Hastamat
But still, our standard is still a good hygienic design and execution.
Tom Rougeux
And what parts of the machine may still not tolerate washdown?
Thomas Bornemann
In general, if we talk about hygienic design and washdown, our machines are built in stainless steel, all of them. All of the machines are in a dry production area. And all of the parts which are in contact with the product can be cleaned with water.
Even if it's not produced for the wet area.
Tom Rougeux
Tell us about when a customer orders a machine, is Hastamat involved with the installation of a machine?
Thomas Bornemann
Absolutely.
Tom Rougeux
Do you farm out the installation to somebody else or do you send technicians?
How does that work?
Thomas Bornemann
We are sending technicians, and the customer is always doing the complete phase of the project and with our technical team to be also prepared for the installation. It's also very important to have the right size of forklift and things like that.
Tom Rougeux
What about training?
Thomas Bornemann
Training is also a very important point. So we offer to our customers also training. There's always a kind of basic training included in the installation.
But my recommendation here is to have the standard training, let the operators run for a while, because then the questions come up, and then to have another training.
Tom Rougeux
Is purchasing a piece of equipment like this a long term decision? How long do they last and how long should a customer expect them to last?
Dennis Feldbusch
Like Thomas mentioned, there are still machines running in the market for over 35-40 years. So it's not a machine which you have to change in 2, 3, 4, 5 years.
