Weighing Sticky, Fragile and Dusty Products
Dennis Feldbusch, Area Sales Manager at Hastamat, explains that weighers can use special surface coatings and dimple plates for sticky products, and reduced drop heights plus inclined baggers for fragile products. Thomas Bornemann, Director Sales & Marketing, adds that dusty or crumbly products, including flour, are handled with dust extraction synchronized with machine speed and sieves on feeding systems.
Key takeaways
- Dennis Feldbusch says sticky products can be handled with different coatings on the vibration chutes and with dimple plates.
- For fragile products, Hastamat reduces dropping height as much as possible and can use inclined baggers so the product slides instead of falling.
- Thomas Bornemann says dusty or crumbly products are handled with dust extraction systems synchronized with the speed of the machine and with sieves on feeding systems.
Common questions
- How do you weigh sticky products on a multihead weigher?
- According to Dennis Feldbusch of Hastamat, weighers can be built with different coatings on the surfaces of the vibration chutes and with dimple plates for sticky products. Hastamat looks at the product first and adapts or customizes the machine to the product's behavior.
- How can fragile snack products be protected during weighing and bagging?
- Dennis Feldbusch of Hastamat says they reduce the dropping height as much as they can in every section of the system, and can use inclined baggers so the product slides instead of falling, which protects it.
- How does packaging equipment handle dusty products like flour?
- Thomas Bornemann of Hastamat says they use specially designed parts for dusty or crumbly products, such as dust extraction systems on several sections synchronized with the speed of the machine, and sieves installed on feeding systems. Asked whether this covers products like flour, he said yes.

How does Hastamat weigh sticky, oily, fragile or irregular products, and we were talking about beef jerky before, without creating constant operator involvement?
Dennis Feldbusch, Area Sales Manager, Hastamat
Yeah, there are different designs of the weigher. So, for example, we can have different coatings on the surfaces of the vibration chutes, dimple plates, for example, for sticky products. When we're talking about fragile products, we reduce the dropping height as much as we can in every section of the way of the system.
We can use inclined baggers so that the product is not falling. It's sliding, to protect the product. Like I said in the beginning, first of all, we look at the product and we adapt the machine or customize the machine to the product's behavior.
Tom Rougeux
So, you don't just already have the machine built and the customer is going to throw their product in it?
Dennis Feldbusch
There is a standard for sure, but at the end, there are some small things we can adjust to the product.
Tom Rougeux
So, how does Hastamat handle dusty products, products that make a lot of crumbs, products that can spill around? What does Hastamat do to control those kind of products?
Thomas Bornemann, Director Sales & Marketing, Hastamat
For such kind of products, we have also special designed parts on the machine. For example, dust extraction systems on several sections synchronized with the speed of the machine. So, sieves installed on feeding systems, for example.
Also, here we have special solutions.
Tom Rougeux
Okay. So, you can handle flour or things that make a lot of dust?
Thomas Bornemann
Yes, for sure.
