Dennis Feldbusch, Area Sales Manager at Hastamat, explains that their weighers can run up to four to six different products or ingredients. Their biggest weigher, a 24-head weigher, can be split into four sections, each with its own target weight, effectively four weighers in one. Thomas Bornemann, Director Sales & Marketing, adds that weighing each component saves giveaway costs on expensive ingredients.

Key takeaways

  • Dennis Feldbusch says Hastamat weighers can run up to four to six different products, flavors or ingredients, mixed on top and brought down into the packaging machine.
  • Hastamat's biggest weigher, a 24-head weigher, can be split electrically and physically into four sections, each set to its own weight, such as 15 grams of nuts and 10 grams of candies.
  • Thomas Bornemann explains that controlling each single component by weight helps save giveaway costs when a mix contains expensive and cheap products.

Common questions

Can a multihead weigher weigh multiple ingredients into one package?
Yes. According to Dennis Feldbusch of Hastamat, their weighers can run up to four to six different products, flavors or ingredients, mix them on top and bring them down into the packaging machine. Thomas Bornemann gives muesli as an example of a product with up to five or six components.
How do you set separate target weights for each component in a mix?
Dennis Feldbusch of Hastamat explains that a weigher such as their 24-head weigher, their biggest, can be split electrically and physically into four sections. Each section is handled on its own, for example 15 grams of nuts and 10 grams of candies, so each component's weight in the bag is accurate.
Why weigh each ingredient separately in a mixed product?
According to Thomas Bornemann of Hastamat, mixes like muesli contain both expensive and cheap products. Controlling each single component by weight helps the customer save giveaway costs, which matters most when one ingredient is especially expensive.

What kind of machine would you recommend for automatically weighing multiple ingredients into a single package? What kind of machine does that?

Dennis Feldbusch, Area Sales Manager, Hastamat

So with our weighers we have the possibility to run up to four to six different products or flavors or ingredients with the weigher. You mix it, okay, on top and bring it down into the packaging machine. So that's, that's possible.

Tom Rougeux

So you can combine ingredients like a nut trail mix or something like that?

Thomas Bornemann, Director Sales & Marketing, Hastamat

Yeah, absolutely. For example, muesli. Muesli product is, uh, it's contents up to five, six different products, and, and there are expensive products and cheap products, and, and the benefit for a customer, we, we can control each single component by weight to save giveaway costs.

Tom Rougeux

I see. So if, uh, if you have a product that's made up of different ingredients and one of those ingredients is especially expensive, you want to be accurate in that way.

Thomas Bornemann

Sure.

Tom Rougeux

Very nice. So how do you automatically dose several products or several components into one package at separate target weights? For instance, if you're going to make a muesli or you're going to make a trail mix and it has more almonds than cashews, which is an irritant of mine, how do you, how do you do that? How do you put different, different weight of products into the same bag coming out of one machine?

Dennis Feldbusch

But we have, let's say, our biggest weigher is a 24-head weigher, okay? So when, when we want to have, let's say, four different kind of products inside the bag, or, right, in the tray or the can or something, we will split the weigher in four sections, okay? The same weigher, the same weigher in four section, and like Thomas said, electrically but also physically, okay? So in each section we will fill in, let's say, nuts, muesli, whatever.

Tom Rougeux

Yep.

Dennis Feldbusch

And then we have the electronic, we have at the end, let's say, four separate weighers in one.

Tom Rougeux

I see.

Dennis Feldbusch

You understand?

Tom Rougeux

So you could, let's say you had pretzel sticks, candies, almonds and cashews, right?

Dennis Feldbusch

And you can, you can handle every section like only. So you can set for nuts 15 gram, you can set for the candies 10 gram, okay, and so the, you have always the accurate weight from each single component in the bag.

Tom Rougeux

Very well.
