Frozen and Individually Quick Frozen (IQF) Food Packaging Machines: What Cold and Wet Change
Cold, wet and fragile is the hardest combination in food packaging, and Hastamat engineered a hygienic design concept for exactly it. Sanitation stops being a preference here and becomes a specification.
Cold, wet and fragile is the hardest combination in food packaging.
Each one alone is manageable. Together they change nearly every component on the line, and they promote sanitation from an operating preference to a specification decision made before anything is ordered.
The equipment looks like a dry snack line from across the room. Almost nothing in it is the same machine. If you are still deciding the architecture itself, what packaging machine do I need covers that choice before this one.
What moisture does to a packaging line
Water is the whole story, and it arrives from three directions: the product carries it, the air condenses it wherever cold meets warm, and the cleaning regime applies it deliberately.
- Product sticks. Wet or frozen pieces cling to surfaces they would slide off when dry, so discharge geometry is chosen for the product rather than borrowed from a dry line.
- Seals need clean film. Free water and ice in the seal area work against a reliable seal, so the seal system and the product path are designed together.
- Steel has to be specified for the environment. Anything that is not degrades, and it degrades first where you cannot see it.
- Cleaning is aggressive. Wet cleaning with chemicals, several times a day, is normal in these plants, and the machine has to come apart and go back together at that frequency.
What hygienic design actually means
The term gets used loosely. On a machine built for wet areas it means specific, checkable things, and the Hastamat fresh and frozen concept delivers all of them.
Separation
Drive elements sit clearly apart from the product side, and electrical enclosures live outside the product area entirely. Hastamat's CP Hygienic Design weigher separates the electronics from a frameless housing and lets the control cabinet be positioned away from the product zone, which is what makes the machine itself washable.
Access
Every format part comes off without tools, for cleaning and for format changes. That sounds like a convenience feature and it is a sanitation requirement: a part that needs tools is a part that gets cleaned less thoroughly under time pressure.
Construction
Stainless steel contact parts and a build rated for the environment. Hastamat specifies the CP Hygienic Design weigher to IP 65 for wet-area operation, and runs the same concept through the R and RM bagging machines, which use a low installation height to protect product at speed and keep drive elements away from the product side.
Weighing cold product
Multihead weighing is the normal approach for Individually Quick Frozen (IQF) vegetables, fruit, seafood, cheese and prepared frozen food, and the mechanics are the same as any other line. How a multihead weigher reduces giveaway covers those.
Discharge consistency is what gets engineered. Frozen pieces clump, stick and occasionally freeze together in the hopper, so hopper geometry, surface finish and discharge design are chosen for the product, and that is the part most worth proving on your actual material before you buy.
Giveaway matters more here than on most lines, because frozen and fresh product is expensive per unit weight and the packs are often large.
Handling before the weigher
IQF product is individually frozen so it stays free-flowing, and that property is worth protecting. Rough handling breaks pieces, warm surfaces cause partial thaw and refreeze, and any accumulation lets product fuse into clumps that a weigher cannot portion.
Distribution and buffering matter as much as on any line, with the addition that buffers here have to return product to the process cleanly instead of parking it somewhere it can warm up. Hastamat builds transfer systems using cascades, rotary tables and swivel cups to hand product over gently, with servo control so format changes happen without tools.
Sealing at temperature
Cold product and cold film behave differently at the sealing jaws, and the seal window is set for the temperature at which the line actually runs. Hastamat's R and RM series handle both heatseal and PE welding processes, with optional protective gassing and liquid dosing for products that need them.
Piepenbrock Packaging runs your product and your film on the machine and sets those parameters to your conditions. If you are also moving to a recyclable or paper-based structure, that trial is the place to prove the combination. Running paper and recyclable materials covers that shift.
Send us the product and the sanitation regime
Hastamat has built weighing, dosing and bagging equipment for over 60 years, since 1953, and developed a hygienic design concept specifically for fresh and frozen production. That is a machine designed from the start for the environment you run, instead of a dry-goods machine with stainless panels added. Piepenbrock Packaging is the North American arm of the same family-owned group, in business since 1913, and supports those lines across the United States, Canada and Mexico.
Tell us the product and its temperature at the packaging area, whether it clumps, the pack format and target weight, the rate you need sustained, and the cleaning regime the area runs under including frequency and chemicals. That last one shapes the specification as much as the product itself, and getting it right early is what gives you a line that still washes down cleanly in year ten.
